Thousands birds culled in West Bengal, India

As per latest information received, a total mortality of 85006 poultry birds has been reported from Birbhum, Dakshin Dinajpur and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal.

On 17th_January 2008, the HSADL, Bhopal received morbid samples from Purulia, Kooch Bihar, Nadia and Murshidabad. While samples received from Purulia, Kooch Bihar, Nadia have tested negative, two samples from the Mushidabad district have tested positive on the basis of rapid tests. The laboratory is carrying out further confirmatory tests.

Fresh cases of mortality have been reported from the districts of Burdwan, South 24 Parganas and Nadia. The Burdwan and Nadia districts border the affected districts of Birbhum and Murshidabad. Samples have been sent ot the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal.

As of today, a total of 64 Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) are carrying out culling operations in Birbhum district and 33 RRTs in the Dakshin Dinajpur district. Further, 16 RRTs are already deployed in Murshidabad for intensive surveillance.

Active surveillance is being undertaken in the affected areas of West Bengal. The need for prompt collection of samples from the areas of unusual mortality and their speedy transmission to Bhopal has been emphasized on all concerned.

The State Government has been requested to ensure effective functioning of the culling teams and payment of compensation on-the-spot.

Animal Husbandry Commissioner of the Government of India has also reached Kolkata and conferred with the apex-level authorities of West Bengal.

All the State Governments have been requested to maintain adequate surveillance and report any unusual mortality at the earliest.
