10 tested positive for Influenza A H1N1, India

In India, 176 persons have been tested of which ten have been tested positive for novel Influenza A [H1N1]. The rest of the samples have been found negative for the novel virus.

Health screening of passengers coming from affected countries is continuing on 21 International airports. 47690 passengers have been screened on 7.6.2009. Around 20080 passengers were from affected countries. 221 doctors and 90 paramedics have been deployed to main 76 counters at the above airports. Three suspect cases, one each at Cochin, Delhi and Kolkata have been isolated at the identified health facility.

A 25 year old male passenger who sat in close proximity to the positive case [reported on 5/6/09] in British Airways Flight [BA 277] has been tested positive. All his close contacts are being traced and would be administered chemoprophylaxis. Another 35 year old male passenger who took New York-Delhi AI 102 reaching Delhi on 2nd June 2009 developed symptoms on 4th June have also tested positive. This passenger is on home quarantine and his contacts have been provided with chemoprophylaxis

So far samples of 176 persons have been tested of which ten have been tested positive for novel Influenza A [H1N1]. The rest of the samples have been found negative for the novel virus. Sample of one person is under process. Of these, 65 were identified through health screening at International Airports and the rest were samples from persons who have self reported.

The Central Rapid Response Team is assisting the State for instituting public health measures that need to be taken in the event of a cluster reporting.

The situation is being monitored.

World Health Organization has reported 21,940 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1 infection from 69 countries as on 5th June 2009. There have been 125 deaths.Further update from WHO is awaited.
