Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this morning that former Governor Hugh L. Carey has passed away at 92. Hugh Carey served as governor from 1975 to 1982, after serving seven terms in Congress.

Hugh Carey passed away peacefully at his summer home on Shelter Island, New York early Sunday morning on August 7, 2011, surrounded by his family.

Hugh Leo Carey was an American attorney, the 51st Governor of New York from 1975 to 1982, and a former seven-term United States Representative.

Hugh Carey was born in Brooklyn, New York. Carey joined the U.S. Army as an enlisted man during World War II, served in Europe, and reached the rank of colonel. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1942 and law degree in 1951 from St. John’s University and was admitted to the bar that same year.

Hugh Carey was widely credited with rescuing the city from bankruptcy during the 1970s fiscal crisis. The Democrat also started the “I Love New York” campaign and the Empire State Games.

Hugh Carey became the first Democrat reelected New York State governor in 40 years, but decided against seeking a third term as governor.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.
