Former US President Bill Clinton turns to vegan diet

Former US President Bill Clinton is speaking out about his plant based, heart healthy diet, saying that he believes the vegan regimen or vegan diet is helping to reverse the damage to his heart and blood vessels caused by cardiovascular heart disease.

In 2004, Bill Clinton underwent quadruple bypass surgery for heart after experiencing tightness in his chest. Even after cutting down on calories and cholesterol, he had to have another heart surgery procedure last year. Doctors put two stents in one of the veins from the bypass surgery.

After the second heart bypass surgery procedure, U.S. diet guru Dr Dean Ornish met Mr Clinton and gave him some advice. Dean Ornish had worked with White House chefs during Mr Bill Clinton’s administration to get healthier foods in the US president’s diet.

Bill Clinton says he has gone totally vegan – no meat, no dairy, no eggs or even oil. Bill Clinton, 64, said his new goal was to get his weight down to 185lbs, what it was when he was 13 years old. ?I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now,’ he said.

Bill Clinton’s diet has changed so much since his McDonald’s days that when CNN’s Dr Sanjay Gupta asked him in a recent interview whether he considers himself a vegan, the former US president replied: ”Well, I suppose I am.”

Bill Clinton is trying to spread his newfound zeal for healthy eating to children. The Clinton Foundation has teamed up with the American Heart Association and is helping 12,000 schools promote exercise and offer better lunches so decades from now, today’s children will not face the same heart troubles he has.
