In Vitro Fertilization Research Centre in AIIMS, India

The Indian Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, dedicated to the Nation the first state of the art In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Research Centre established at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
This facility will help those couples who are not able to have a child on their own and need some assistance to be able to conceive. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that this centre has been created with a mission to not only provide cost effective services to the majority, but also to foster an environment that promotes research and training.
Health Minister spoke "The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, AIIMS, has added yet another milestone in the history by adding this much needed Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) centre in the Institute under the leadership of Professor Suneeta Mittal, Chief ART Centre and Head, Deptt. of Obstetrics & Gynecology, AIIMS, and I compliment her for taking this initiative in the interest of women's health in the country".
Until the last decade the problem of infertility received little attention, as the main focus of health services has been on efforts to slow down population growth. Defining reproductive health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity in all matters relating to the reproductive system and its function. Infertility is deeply distressing with psychological trauma and pain, a disease worthy of investigation and treatment. In a society as ours where child bearing defines a woman's identity and motherhood of great social significance, infertility leaves unhealed scars traumatizing the couple socially and emotionally.
ART (Assisted reproductive techniques) involves the direct manipulation of human oocytes, sperms and embryos outside the body to establish pregnancy, literally means "fertilization in glass" hence the famous name "test tube baby ". Albeit expensive, invasive and time-consuming ART offers an infertile couple an opportunity to achieve pregnancy. IVF and ICSI involve inducing ovulation, monitoring egg development, procuring eggs from the woman's ovary, inseminating them with sperms, development and growth of embryos on glass dishes in the laboratory in conditions simulating in vivo conditions, and subsequent transfer into the woman's womb.
