Update on Avian Influenza in West Bengal, India

No suspected human cases of Avian Influenza have been detected in any of the affected districts in West Bengal, in India. Number of affected districts (14 districts) remains the same. In these districts, 48 blocks and five municipalities are involved.
With the flu spreading around the world, the virus has turned up in birds in Asia, Europe and Africa. So far, bird flu has mostly been passed from birds either to other birds or, in isolated cases, to humans.
A total population of 22.92 lakhs is under surveillance [9.69 lakhs in 0-3 Km area and 13.22 lakhs in 3-10 Km area]. In 0-3 Km area 704 persons with fever and URI have been detected of which 4 had exposure to sick/infected birds. In the 3-10 Kms area a total of 835 persons have been detected with fever & URI of which two had exposure history. These cases have been followed up. In the hospitals, 714 patients with Fever and URI have reported of three of them are admitted.
A control room is functioning from the Emergency Medical Relief division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi from 8.00 AM to 8.00 PM. The control room number is 23061469.
