NYU Langone Medical Center and Hurricane Sandy impact

Empower & Inspire: Spread Health & Wellness

After the onslaught of superstorm Sandy caused the back-up generator at New York University’s medical center to fail, hospital officials say at least 300 patients were successfully evacuated to other area hospitals overnight.

Among the 300 patients receiving care at NYU Langone Medical Center when its power went out Monday night and then back-up generators failed: its board chairman and benefactor Kenneth Langone. Kenneth Langone, the billionaire chairman of New York University Hospital, said he was a patient at the NYU Langone Medical Center when it lost power during Hurricane Sandy and had to be evacuated.

By 11:00 Tuesday morning, all 300 patients were safely transferred from NYU Langone Medical Center to nearby hospitals able to provide the appropriate level of care.

NYU Langone Medical Center says:

We worked closely with the FDNY, NYPD, Office of Emergency Management, and accepting hospitals throughout this process and thank them for their immediate assistance. We also thank our dedicated faculty, staff, and medical students for their tireless efforts during the storm.

At this time, we are focusing on assessing the full extent of the storm’s impact on all of our patient care, research, and education facilities.

To our staff: We are asking that only staff members instructed by their supervisors report to work on Wednesday and Thursday as we continue to perform operational assessments on our facilities. If you work in Facilities, Building Services, Environmental Services, Security, or Food and Nutrition, please reach out to your supervisor for reporting instructions. All other staff, please do not report to work.

We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.
