American physicians supporting marijuana research

Marijuana has been smoked for its medicinal properties for centuries. Preclinical, clinical, and anecdotal reports suggest numerous potential medical uses for marijuana. Although the indications for some conditions have been well documented, less information is available about other potential medical uses.

Additional research is needed to further clarify the therapeutic value of cannabinoids and determine optimal routes of administration. Unfortunately, research expansion has been hindered by a complicated federal approval process, limited availability of research-grade marijuana, and the debate over legalization. American College of Physicians (ACP) believes the science on medical marijuana should not be obscured or hindered by the debate surrounding the legalization of marijuana for general use.

In this paper the American College of Physicians lays out a series of positions on research into, and the use of, marijuana as medicine.

Marijuana has been smoked for its medicinal properties for centuries. It was in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia until 1942 when it was removed because federal legislation made the drug illegal.

About Marijuana
Cannabis, also known as marijuana or ganja, is a psychoactive product of the plant Cannabis sativa. The herbal form of the drug consists of dried mature flowers and subtending leaves of pistillate plants. The resinous form, known as hashish, consists primarily of glandular trichomes collected from the same plant material. The major biologically active chemical compound in cannabis is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly referred to as THC.
